We Drive a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar, and an Audi R8 in Vegas!

November 2nd, 2012

A couple of weeks ago we were in Las Vegas for a conference (and in our last post, you could see these pictures of our work at the Aria Resort & Casino).  Since we’re not really gamblers at heart, we found something much more fun.  We headed out to the desert with the folks from World Class Driving to drive 4 supercars:  the Ferrari 458 Red Italia, Audi R8, Jaguar XKR-S, and the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante (when you pay this much for a car, it probably should have a name this long).  Anyway, here are some impressions from an amateur but enthusiastic driver.

Audi R8

Audi R8 The Audi R8 was the first car I drove, and since we were winding our way from the strip to Lake Mead, I spent more time in traffic than on twisty roads.  Still, the 5.2L V10 responded instantly when I pressed the accelerator, and there was no doubt there were 525 horses under the hood.  Another couple who drove with us, on holiday from New Zealand, said they were able to make all four wheels spin when they launched it from a stop sign, which I’m sure they did, but in the city and in traffic, it seemed ill-advised for me to try.
Ferrari 458 Italia Red

Ferrari 458 Red Italia

It is hard to pick a favorite among these cars, but this one is definitely in the top two for me.  It is easily the most beautiful, making the others’ designs seem half-baked, or at least tame, by comparison.  The Ferrari sounds so good, and drives so intuitively, that I definitely pushed it harder than the others.  I red-lined it three times; once from a stop, and twice more closing a gap that had “inadvertently” appeared between me and the driver ahead.  Incredibly impractical for going to the market, or anywhere with another person, it still is so much fun that I can understand how someone might get passionate about this car.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante

Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder PerformanteDriving in a tight formation with 5 other drivers, through twisting desert roads, I found the 570 horsepower of the Lambo’s V10 incredibly responsive, and only occasionally, slightly terrifying.  It feels absolutely glued to the pavement, which means you can go through turns at speeds and G-forces you didn’t realize were possible. The brakes felt like they could stop a train, and pushed back as I applied more force.  Was it my favorite, though? Everything about this car screams “Race Me!” and since that wasn’t the purpose of our outing, I may not be giving it its due. So as much fun as it was to drive for a half-hour, I can’t imagine driving it across the country.

Jaguar XKR-S

Jaguar XKR-S

I have to admit, this car really surprised me.  I had agreed to this experience primarily to drive the beautiful, elegant Italian machines, and at the end of the day, this was my all-around favorite car.  Why?  In three words, Gran Turismo and Torque.  The Jaguar is an amazing comfortable car, and that’s saying something, given that the Italians in the bunch cost twice as much.  It is a grand touring car in every sense of the word, and definitely felt like a car I could point east on I-70 and drive all the way back to Indiana.  Yes, there was carbon fiber here and there, like the Lamborghini, but it felt more like sitting in a luxury sedan than in the cockpit of a race car.  Or, it did until I drove it, which brings us to torque.

The XKR-S has 502 lb-ft of torque, which is why it will rock from 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds, and (I’m told) beat every other car here in the standing 1/4 mile.  If that preceding sentence means nothing to you, then let me summarize: in this car, at normal highway speeds, the acceleration will take your breath away.  It feels less like a car, and more like a rocket.

What burning questions did I fail to answer?  Let me know in the comments!

Labor Day Hours for Cut2SizeMetals.com

August 30th, 2012

We have lots of labor going on at Cut2SizeMetals.com, both in our aluminum, stainless steel, brass and copper sales and our custom fabrication. The best way to celebrate all that hard work is with a day off, so we’re taking Monday off, and hope you will, too. We also remember the labor of previous generations, as shown here in this 1942 vocational video about sheet metal workers.
If you need materials from us to ship before the holiday, we need your order no later than noon on Friday August 31st. Orders received after that will ship on Tuesday September 4th at the earliest.  Of course, if you want something delivered before the weekend, you need to be ordering NOW.  Specifically, we need your order by noon on Thursday August 30th, and it will have to go overnight shipping, if you want it before the weekend.  Give us a call at 812-429-1634 if you have questions.

Who are we celebrating on Labor Day?

August 30th, 2012

The neon sign you see here is posted prominently in our shop to remind us what the standard is.   Ever wonder how many farmers, bakers, and firefighters we have in this country, all striving for quality in their work? Here are the number of Americans in various occupations, according to a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report:

  • Firefighters: 258,000
  • Hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists: 718,000
  • Chefs and head cooks: 281,000
  • Musicians, singers and related workers 179,000
  • Bakers 183,000
  • Taxi drivers and chauffeurs 286,000
  • Service station attendants 96,000
  • Farmers and ranchers 825,000
  • Pharmacists 232,000
  • Teachers 6.5 million

Which ones surprised you?

Amazing Welding Pic – Hand Welding the Nearly Impossible

August 24th, 2012

Bead of weld laid on .045" dia. stainless steel welding rod

Do we obsess about the quality of details when we fabricate projects?  Absolutely.  And in an environment with so many talented craftsmen, is there a tendency to occasionally show off to establish your place in the pecking order? Guilty.  As evidence, we present the following picture.  For the uninitiated, it takes a bit of explanation.
What you see here is a piece of .045″ T316 stainless steel filler rod.  (If you have a ruler in inches, it’s smaller than the smallest mark, which is 1/16″ or .063″). Without melting this tiny stick of stainless, Doug has TIG welded a bead along it using .023″ T316 stainless steel filler metal and a 3/32 tungsten.  The dime shows you just how incredibly fine this welding is. It hasn’t been cleaned, brushed, or finished in any way. When I asked Doug about this, his response was: “That was my first try; I think I can do better.”

(By the way, if YOU can weld like this, and want to do it for a living, get in touch with randy@esmw.com)

Copper Sheet Flower Sculpture

August 21st, 2012

copper sheet metal flowers sculptureWe enjoyed this sheet metal sculpture of a flower garden at Stellina in St. Louis.  [They have great homemade pasta by the way, so give them a try next time you're in St. Louis.] It features hammered copper sheet, stainless steel round, brass round, and copper round for the “stems,” and a variety of patinas on different metal sheets.  There are a number of other small stainless steel sculptures there, so if you like this one, let us know, and we’ll stop again for some pasta and pictures!

French Classics: Delage, Avions Voisin, and Labourdette Rolls-Royce

April 13th, 2012
1938 Delage

This 1938 Delage has center handle doors that open like a bank vault.

As a sponsor of the My Classic Car show on the Speed Channel, Cut2SizeMetals.com received an advance copy of their upcoming episode – a glimpse inside the private car collection of Jack Rich.  Of the over 80 cars in his collection, host Dennis Gage honed in on three French cars from the mid 20th century.  They have graciously allowed me to share a few pictures with you to go along with my appreciation of them below.

The first vehicle, a 1938 Delage, is shown to the right.  As the caption suggests, it has a center handle door which opens out maybe 8 inches, and then moves back parallel to the car.  Not only is it a unique way to open a door, but it makes getting in and out a pleasure.

1931 Avions Voisin

The 1931 Avions Voisin, with its incredibly low underslung chassis.

Another really unique machine is the 1931 Avions Voisin C20.  This V12  has a beautfiul wooden propeller fan under the hood, as well as an airplane-like cockpit, both indicative of the Voisin’s aeronautical heritage.  Voisin was an aviation pioneer, and worked in lighter alloys like aluminum for his designs.

Labourdette Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal

Labourdette Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal

The final car of the episode is truly stunning.  It is a Labourdette Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal, and although lots of classic cars get the moniker “boat,” this body was designed and shaped using naval carpentry methods.  This car was likely rebodied with the Labourudette in 1947 at a cost of $44,000 (or almost $425,000 in 2010 dollars).  The Vutotal part was an innovation as well.  Lacking the side or top frame of a traditional windscreen, the Labourdette attached the thick glass only to the hood, leaving a unobstructed “total view,” as the name suggested.
If you find these cars as intriguing as we do, this episode of My Classic Car, number 6, will air this Sunday morning and Tuesday afternoon on the Speed Channel.  Check your local listings, and let us know what you think of these machines.
